Today marked the transition from preparation to execution.

The morning began at the mission house with breakfast before departing for the hospital at 7:30 AM. There was a clear sense of anticipation—today would be our first full operative day.

Grounded in Purpose

At 8:30 AM, we joined the hospital staff for their daily devotional. We learned more about the history of the hospital, originally founded as part of a leprosy mission—an enduring testament to serving those most in need.

Together, we worshiped by singing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Following this, Dr. Randell had the opportunity to thank the team for welcoming us and share a brief devotional on Colossians 3:23—a reminder to work faithfully in all things, even the small and unseen.

Afterward, we spent time with the hospital director over traditional Nepali tea, continuing to build the relationships that make this mission possible.

A Critical Turning Point

While the sterilization team worked diligently to run the autoclaves, we closely monitored the revised protocol developed the day prior.

This was a pivotal moment for the mission.

The updated gravity displacement sterilization process with multilayer validation proved successful. All instruments passed validation checks—clearing the way for surgery to begin safely. After the uncertainty of the previous day, this was a significant win for the entire team.

Caring for Those Along the Way

Before beginning joint replacements, we were able to care for a longtime mission partner who has served faithfully in the mountain villages of Nepal.

Procedure: Dorsal wrist inclusion cyst excision

Outcome: Smooth, successful, and discharged shortly after

We also evaluated her father, who presented with a 2-month-old Achilles tendon rupture. Given the chronicity and setting, we recommended non-operative management and provided a boot in plantarflexion—made possible through donated supplies from DXI Solutions.

Surgical Cases Begin

With sterilization confirmed, the team moved forward.

Case 1 – Total Knee Arthroplasty

Spinal anesthesia performed by Dr. Jason Rolfe

Procedure completed in collaboration with Dr Sapkota

Outcome: Successful

Post-op: Patient was able to ambulate the same day with therapy and is progressing well

Case 2 – Total Knee Arthroplasty (Complex)

Notable for a large medial femoral condyle cyst

Required autograft bone grafting

Outcome: Successful without complication

Across all cases today:

1 minor procedure

2 total joint replacements

Zero complications

Sustaining the System

Even after a full surgical day, the work continued. The team turned over instruments, preparing and staging them for the next day’s sterilization cycles—ensuring we can start efficiently again in the morning.

The Team Behind the Mission

Morale remains strong, even as fatigue sets in. Humor continues to carry the team—thanks in large part to Kalli Crutchfield, who reminded us all:

“My back hurts… because I’m carrying the team.”

Closing the Day

After returning to the mission house, we shared a simple meal of chicken sandwiches and fries before gathering for devotional.

Kevin Weldon led the evening, sharing the story of how he and his wife Cynthia were called into mission work. It was a powerful testimony—one that left few dry eyes in the room.

The day ended in reflection, gratitude, and prayer.

Now, it is time for rest—so we can be ready for another full day ahead.
